Viscosity is one of the major variables affecting filter flow rate. The flow of liquid through an orifice - including pores in a membrane filter - is inversely proportional to
the viscosity of the fluid. Higher viscosity will result in lower flow rate, unless it is offset by an increase in pressure drop.
Most filters are rated for flow per PSID (Differential Pressure) using water. Water at room temperature has a viscosity of 1 centipoise (1 cP). Because the flow is directly proportional it is a straightforward calculation to determine the effect of viscosity. Just make sure to determine the fluid viscosity in centipoise!
(Fluid Flow) = [(water viscosity) / (Fluid Viscosity)] x (Water Flow)
For example: A filter with a flow rate of 10 gpm with water, would have a flow rate of 1 gpm if the fluid has a viscosity of 10 cP, and a flow rate of 0.1 gpm if the viscosity was 100 cP.
In the realm of sterilizing filtration, micron ratings can be a bit confusing. Some suppliers call out a rating of 0.22 mm. Others use 0.2 mm. Some actually use both (usually but not always for different products). Is there really a difference? Read More
